What is the best place to set the mixture for emissions testing? Lean misfire perhaps?

I should probably also add something to this thread...my 300SEL has some of the same little annoyances that hit man outlined. Mine also has a slight misfire at hot idle, super smooth when cold. So I will be following this thread closely!
