Did you put in any new glow plugs?
As for the Wife; years ago I induced a girlfriend into doing an oil change herself. After that was over with I explained to her that that was one of the easiest things to do on the car as far as repair and maint. She never again rushed me when I worked on her car.
Now that I am married and my Wife gets picky (the Mercedes is her car) about some repair work I always offer to show here how to do it if she wants to try.
