Well, for a 107, the shop manual gives a maximum inner dimension for the ball joint receiving socket, implying that any larger dimension won't hold it properly. Also, the shop manual implies that the "new car" ball joint itself has a smaller OD in this area than does a replacement. On the force involved, it's A LOT to remove it and replace it.
