There are lots of choices if you want more of one trait than another. My own personal experience and opinion, for all around friend, guard dog, companion, babysitter, etc. you can't go wrong with a German Shepherd.

I know enough about German Shepherds that I could probably sit here and type for the next hour. If you have kids in your home and want security there is no other dog.
