Bosch Starters

Usually biggest thing is carbon dust from the brushes.

Someone[her name shall go unmentioned to protect the foolish]took the
battery charger[set on 2a trickle to keep the monster 8D s up]off a 30ish
foot Pearson sloop. The packing on the shaft seal was old and dripped a
little.
Apparently, the batteries took the bilge pumps on vacation some time
within the 30 day period after removal of the battery charger. The Vessel
was found tied to the dock with 2 3/4 feet of water in the hull.

(This very same Vessel won the Brand New Yanmar lottery, one year prior
to the U-Boat conversion, when She who shall go nameless failed to notice
the engine temperature gauge in the red[blocked seacock...intake for cooling water]
I'm told she couldn't ignore the 1st Yanmar grinding to a halt.
As a result the New Yanmar was equipped with a low oil/overheat alarm.
The alarm was wired to a horn of over 200 db.
Man,I hated that horn...every time you started the engine...before you
had enough RPMs to bring the OP up.)

I digress.

All I was told was the sloop had a "New" engine that wouldn't start.
The Interior had been detailed so well I suspected nothing!
Sure enough the Hitachi starter would not engage.'Pulled it off...
'Shaft was rusted (WTF?) 'Cleaned the shaft with a wire wheel and
lubed it.All was well Hitachi started Yanmar... HooRay!
'Went to check the lubricant in the Yanmar's Transmission...MILK Shake.
ALL THE UGLY TRUTHS were then revealed.
(After much screaming on the Cellular)

I still pray, every time I remember the stories, for the LONG suffering
Physician...Husband to She who shall go Un-named...He,Is a good Man!

I know you can replace the "Bendix" on the Bosch starter.(Solenoid)
You'll just have to weigh the cost against a "New" starter.

The starter is just a very powerful electric motor, with a spring loaded
magnetically operated "Engagement" gear(s)[the "Bendix"].When the
"Bendix" fails to "Throw out"[to and engage the flywheel]you get that
annoying No Crank/With the Starter Spinning.
