Well, since someone asked- a short story. The dealer I use in Pittsburgh is (right on my way to/from work) in a former Packard dealership building. The retail parts set-up is such that one must enter a door toward the rear of the building and walk up to a 'dutch' door in the back of the parts dept. 50 feet from the parts counter where the computers are. There is no access to the counter except for techs. Yes they can look up anything really, but I like to show up with the numbers so that John does not have to countinuously print daigrams, walk 50 ft, try again, walk, 50ft etc. until we get the right #. But in this case I'm not even going to bother with the dealer after all.
