Here are some things you can Google to research what's happening:

1) "Oil Company Profits"

2) "Dollar Devaluation"

3) "Rip-Off"

It turns out that for many people and businesses, their oil demand is not flexible. You can't easily reduce driving to work and shopping for food.

So to me it is becoming a matter of trying to see how much they can charge before demand drops - thus maximizing profits.
