tHROTTLE LINKAGE QUESTION

Still pretty mucha newbie on these here oil-burners, but I'm learnin'. Got a question on the throttle linkage set up. I find that I have about 1 - 2" of free travel on the linkage coming out of the firewall & up to the cam on top of the valve cover before the push-rod the the IP starts to move and engine comes off idle. Is it normal to push the fuel pedal down about 2" before you begin to accel.? The bushing on the f/wall is good & as are shifting points. I can live with it but wonder if I'm getting full fuel delivery with a WOT.
