Fixed it. Turned key to position #1. Chain of events: Key turns lock cylinder spindle turns ignition housing spindle turns ignition switch spindle releases switch wiring connector. Turned out that my ignition housing spindle or parts of it sheered off into the receiving ignition switch. So this ignition switch spindle didn't respond to release the wiring connector. Solution--carefully drilled a 3/16th hole through the top slit (there are three) of the ignition switch. (Drilled it straight down into the middle of the switch.) The wiring connector let go! Seems new ignition switch replacement doesn't have this lock tab feature so future problems won't be quite as much of a hassle.
