I've 3 arthroscopies, 2 on one knee and one on the other all in about 3 years time, last one being done 7 years ago. Problem I have is that I keep re-tearing my menisci. Both of my knees are "ready" for more and I've simply refused. I do nothing strenuous with my knees yet I keep re-tearing the cartilage. The problem is the the meniscus does not grow and during the arthroscopic surgery all the doctors do is trim away the damaged tissue so every time there is less tissue left. In my opinion the more they trim the less tissue is left leaving the meniscus more vulnerable to future tearing. My orthopedic specialist did not disagree with me and in fact agreed with my opinion. I just deal with the pain and swelling when it flares up.
Tom, I hope the best for you.
