It is deep irony to me that so many people who are of the political persuasion that detests 'nanny state' type condescension and interference appropriate to themselves or our nation anyway, the wisdom and responsibility to save poor suffering primitives overseas from themselves.
Like an overbearing bro. in law who just knows he knows what you really need to do to fix that widget and steps in, takes it from your hands, and proceeds to really screws things up.
Communism has serious flaws, to be sure, but we completely misread what communism meant in Vietnam and why they were going that route. The people of Vietnam knew very well, for the most part, why they detested Diem and Thieu, even if we didn't, and our attempts to get them to go against their instincts and wishes was seriously fraught with inefficiency.
