What has always been interesting is how others assume that I'm making a statement with my hair. As you correctly point out, many do make such statements. I suppose it's not much different from a peacock or a frilled dragon - using what we've got to make a point - seductive or threatening - to help us survive.
I suppose my current haircut is somewhat grounded in the Buddhist detachment from afflictive attachment to physical appearance, ala the monks. But I'm not attached to that reason
