You don't think we could have wiped out the Japanese if we kept dropping atom bombs on them and preventing them from leaving the islands? It will not happen only if you don't have the stones for it.
How do you figure? We have wiped out species with cruder technology. If it wasn't for us stopping, don't you think the buffalo that roamed the plains could have been eradicated till their numbers were too small to reproduce effectively? IIRC, at one time, they were so plentiful that the plains were black as far as the eye can see. They were almost extinct.
