Rear axle gears question

Does anyone know where I can find info on what rear axle gear ratio came installed in my 84 300 CD turbo? Also, what exact year/models have a higher ratio rear differential that will be a direct bolt-in for my coupe.

I've seen references to the stock gears being 3.08, but also that there are rear differentials out there with 2.88 and even 2.47 gears.

Seems like maybe the 2.47 might be a little too extreme and kill my off-the-line acceleration. The 2.88 ratio sounds like a good compromise though.

Any specific years and models of MBs that have a 2.88 rear that will bolt in directly without any mods?
