For what it's worth.
When I first got my '93 300E two years ago the 1st to 2nd gear shift was very abrupt. My mechanic adjusted it by tweaking something under the car. He had to adjust it several times over several visits but it eventually became as smooth as silk
He said that it had to do with individual driving styles
At any rate, it worked and it's all that matters
