Why did I choose the E34 Fiver as my choice? Well.....

They are reasonably affordable; 1989 models can be had for around $7 to $8K for a 535i with the 208 hp "big six" and available 5-speed.

I will always think of the E34 5-series as "the best looking sedan ever made". It has a tense urgency and refinement to the lines that no Mercedes-Benz period model has. The W124 is higher, narrower, and more "blocky", but still good looking. Of course, my second favorite sedan in terms of styling is the W126 S-class, which I am lucky enough to drive. But you can't get a 5-speed on a W126 unless you dig up a rare Euro 280SE 5-speed. Having three pedals in a car the size of a W126 with a slick 5-speed would be one of the best things in the world.

Plus, I've driven an E34 in the past. Want to take an exit ramp at twice the posted advisory speed? No problem as long as there is no ice on the road and you have good H or V-rated stock tires! Handling feels more composed than any Benz I have driven. And also, the iron-block 3.5 liter BMW six just doesn't have all the head problems of the M103/104 MB six. Of course, the Bimmer has a few electrical problem areas, but nothing that will sideline the car. And I wouldn't want a 540i with the 100K mile lifespan V-8....ick. I'd take the classic 3.5 liter.

The E34 is the "perfect size" for a sedan, too. Slightly larger than the W124, smaller than the W126. If there was a 535iX all-wheel-drive model offered....I'd seriously consider the E34 a perfect car for all needs and purposes that a car could fulfill.
