Mid levels is fine, I've enjoyed getting out into the New Territories and South part of Hong Kong Island too.

Currently in an internet cafe in Kowloon, browing the shops which are quite cool.

I've been alone a lot of the time, next time I will check in to a hostel to meet up with people.

That's great. Stay away from Chungking Mansions lol. One thing you can do is go to a Chinese movie, they're fun and really you don't need to understand the language to understand the story most times.
If you go hiking I think that's a good place to meet up with people on the trails, lots of foreigners and you might be able to join a group.
I know HK can seem unfriendly if you don't know anyone there. A lot of the expats over there seem stuck-up for some reason, and unfortunately it's the Australians and English ones that can be the worst. Why don't you contact one of the local car clubs and see if any meetings are scheduled and go to one of their get-togethers.
