Cause vs. Correlation
From what I have seen and read, the global warming activists correlate the amount of CO2 produced to the temperature of the earth and say that CO2 is causing global warming.
Even if we ignore the fact that water vapor and methane are much more important retainers of solar heat than CO2, does the correlation prove cause?
There are many things that can be correlated with global warming. Compare graphs of global temperatures with the number of people getting tattoos, the length of basketball uniforms in the NBA, or the number of Prius owners. The same correlation as CO2 production. Is Alan Iverson causing global warming? Get a tatt, kill the planet?
The real problem is the retreat of so-called scientists from the scientific method. True scientists propose a hypothesis, construct a controlled experiment to test the hypothesis, then analyze the data and draw a conclusion. Most neo-scientists adopt a hypothesis, find data from uncontrolled sources to support their hypothesis, and find a paying publisher to publish their report.
An interesting correlation is the fact that most record cold temperatures occurred during wars (think Napoleon at Moscow, Hitler at Stalingrad, Battle of the Bulge) when industrial pollution was at its highest. There have been two "Years Without a Summer." 1816 and 1889 were both characterized by failed crops due to frost in July in much of North America and Europe. This was directly related to volcanic activity filling the atmosphere with soot.
Obviously, global warming has been caused by the lack of particulate pollution due to the efforts of environmentalist.
Save the Earth, de-tune your diesel, and pump out the soot.
