My 76 240D had a spin-on main filter. exactly the same as a 123. Earlier ones had a metal canister with an obvious drain plug.
What book are you looking at? The Chiltons book for those models had the drawings of the oil filter and fuel filter reversed. Very confusing the first time you go to change a filter.
Post a picture of the fuel filter area if possible.
