Personally, I think it has to do with a certain amount of civility in the person...the more left, the more anti-authoritarian the person is likely to be...therefore, less respect towards things conventional...
Whereas, righties have a tendency to think things over before making comments or offering opinions...Therefore, they seem too slow, stodgy and "conservative" to things like change. To lefties, the righties are stuck up and as you're observing, without humor or the ability to express it.
Me? I just pick up the stick and poke 'em in back...I may not get the first shot in, but because I have a chance to think about the weak points in their humor, my poke back might be more fatalistic in its delivery...
At least I hope it is...
