My wedding was modest, as my parents opted out of the deal and my wife's family was of limited means...so we pooled what we had to make it a decent event.
We didn't do a gift registry for the same financial reasons...a lot of well-meaning well-wishers who were short on funds.
Got some nice token wedding gifts, as well as some cheap ones, like a plastic pasta collander from one relative. While most of the other gifts have long since been broken or worn out, the collander is still being used today and sits in a prominent place in the kitchen cabinet! Who would have figured?
