The dog may have actually been trying to help. It could be possible that the toe was going south and the dog decided it was time to amputate. Sounds weird but it does happen. I've heard a few stories over the years of dogs finding tumors in their owners. It all starts with the dog constantly sniffing and biting at the area until they went and got checked out. Sure enough they found a tumor in that exact area.
