My '87 190D 2.5T and my '87 300D Turbos all start in 1st gear. They "stand" in 2nd, as soon as you begin to move the start in 1st regardless of how gentle you are with the pedal. The gassers I believe started in 2nd unless you mashed the pedal or shifted down to the 2 position before starting. I can't comment on the 123s and before, nor the 126s, but I'm guessing that if your 190D is a 2.5 it is supposed to start in 1st like the 2.5Turbo.
