I thought I had a thread on this topic already but can't find it now, so apologies if this repeats stuff said elsewhere . . .
I have not been able to determine the size of the fuel tank in my 1996 E300D (W210, OM606). The owner's manual says it has 16.4 gallons including a 2.1 gallon reserve. (Yet we have put as much as 16 gallons in the tank and the low fuel light [which does work, I checked] was not on.)
The EPC shows the fuel tank and gives two part numbers:
(a) 210 470 39 01 (65 liters or 17.2 gallons)
(b) 210 470 55 01 (80 liters or 21.1 gallons)
but doesn't say which one I have.
The dealer looked in his version of the EPC and couldn't tell which one I had.
My copy of the Mercedes dealer literature "1996 E-Class Presentation Guide" (61 pages, 10x12 inches, green cover, spiral bound) came with an "Update" dated 1/96. On page 10 it gives the fuel tank capacity of the E300 Diesel as "17.2 gallons, 21.1 after 12/95." My car was built 10/95 and delivered 10/26/1995 so this suggests it has the smaller tank.
Finally, as requested by a poster here, I pulled back the covering in the trunk and photographed the paper label on the tank.
I don't see anything on this label that looks like a part number. Should I keep looking? Any other suggestions beyond running the tank dry?
Jeremy
