there was no knocking BG. I am not sure why the bearings went bad. The engine looks well-maintained (enough) from the inside. Bearing failure could be from accident -busted oil cooler and engine left running??? Or one short stint on low oil before the accident.
Camshaft looks great. just removed yesterday - lobes are unscathed but have some variance (prb from loose lashing) and bearings in the towers are typical for a cam.
I recall speaking to MB mechs and hearing
"well, lets consider the flow of oil from the pump... where does it go? (insert rhetoric here)..then finally it gets to the camshaft.. don't you think you will have damage there as well?"
NO. There is minimal stress in this area (compare to crank). Continually poor maintenance could could cause damage though
mine had to be a cause of intermittent trauma.
