Used to own an '89 300E. Had something like this. Removed the alternator and took it to a local electrical shop which specialized in Bosch alternators. They found a bad/intermittent voltage regulator and the bearings were about shot. Much less expensive than replacement and you still have the original alternator and know the quality of the rebuild. At the time, my car had 110,000 miles. Hope this helps you.
