I had the same problem with my 95 SL500. Turned out to be the fuse and fuse holder. I just replaced the fuse which checked good electrically but was in bad shape at the ends where it made contact.
Based on that experience, when my ignition switch seemed to have failed some time later, I found the same problem (different fuse).
