There are many areas where we can decrease consumption. Reminders from prospective government employees on how some of these may be achieved is worth while and a benefit to all.
The bigger issue seems to be that our country has for so long promoted excess consumption in almost every way, that too many folks are lost in a sense of self-righteousness for doing the same things they always did.

There is nothing wrong with that.
I don't think it matters that you tell people it is a worthwhile benefit to all. It is very simple. If they are going to do it, you have to show them that it is worthwhile TO THEM.
I suppose they will just have to spend more and have less disposable cash. Other than that, I am not sure how it can be done. You can show them that it will save them $X and that is that. What they choose to do is up to them.
