The w123 that are "collectible" are the models that not many werent produced.

a car can get rusty by sitting in a garage because of the moisture in the garage. The was sitting outside for sometime after reading the description so that would expalin the rusted through floor pans and wheel weels.

If the body has rust on key structural parts I would leave it alone. Now if it was a mercedes from the 20's, 30's, 40's or 50's then I would restore it since the value of that car will only grow.

You should be able drop a diesel drive train in it but make sure you make all the necessary changes.

Just saw it on ebay, a rare car. It will definetly be worth some money give it some time.
