Mainland China has been China since long long before we were the United States. They went red in 1949. ROC, Taiwan, or "Chinese Taipei" <-new one on me, is where the anti-communists fled when the commies took over. The anti-communists established their own national government there. I'm a little hazy on the further particulars, but I think the U.S. recognized the ROC as the legitimate Chinese government and didn't have normal relations with "red" China for quite some time after 1949.
