Master Cylinder Questions

I bought new rubber seals for the MC reservoir on our '85 300D - they came today. Removed reservoir and noticed that although it looked full, the rear section was almost empty. Not sure why alarm did not register.

Question - why would front section (where Max-Min marks are) be full and back section empty when it is only possible to fill the back section? Is there an overflow?

I decided to remove MC while I was about it and check for fluid in booster. Good news - Found none!

Questions - The front MC port has a small disk inside, while the rear port does not. Anyone know if this should be like this? What does the disk do? The front port does seem to have a small pin that points up on one side that the disk rests on - the back port does not have that.

Here is a picture - I took disk out so it would be easier to see it:

Now need to go and get some fluid and maybe a gasket for MC.
