Fully agreed on that, I had a 240D as an undergrad in college, it wasn't fast but it was reliable, excellent handling and lasted long till I sold it off. I agree about the tranny, it was quite light and smooth, specially after I changed the oil and put in M-1 ATF. Same goes for my 300TD and Gurkha with 5 speed, you can shift with your fingers. Btw, 220,000 miles on 300TD driven in US. 118000 miles on the Gurkha which has been driven in traffic, highway and some severe off road rallies and outings in India.
