No, as best I can tell, it is a closed system. Vacuum is pulled when you lock the door. When you unlock the door , the vacuum in the lock line is gone, the spring pushed the pod back to the unlock position, and the boot refills with air from the open nipple.
My actuator failed which was causing my vacuum leak. I got a new one and before I put it in, I had the same concerns. But it does work- I now have a working central lock system including the fuel flap.
Don't know about the trunk pod.
