The bridge was rated at 24,000 lbs...per AXLE according to the article. For a typical 18-wheeler with an evenly-distributed load, the limit would be 120,000 lbs.

Flatbed trailers designed to haul heavy construction equipment have additional axles, I believe.

A load limit of just 24,000 lbs would eliminate most school buses and light cargo trucks, for starters.
