I do something similar - I cut a short piece off an allen key and taped it into a small socket so it stays in place. I use a long socket extension (flex type) and attach a magnet to make sure I don't lose the bolt (again!)
From experience, I echo the above comment about marking everything carefully. It's not essential to be at TDC, but mark just where the rotor points. When replacing the distributor won't of course go straight in, but will rotate as the gears mesh - Getting distributor 1 tooth out is not good. Don't rotate engine while distributor is out - don't ask why I know this!
