In all fairness, it probably wasn't the liquid that smelled, rather the rubber burning slightly as it was cut by the band saw.
The liquid was slick but not thick - about the consistancy of water or light oil, it dripped readliy out of the cut line. The fluid was mostly in the bottom of the mount but there is also an "X" shaped perforation in the rubber diaphram between the sections which would allow the fluid to readily pass between them. It seemed like only a small amount leaked out when I opened it up. By my estimation, there should have been more in there based on the size of the interior cavity.
I detected no release of a gas of any kind during the cutting. There is actually a weep hole in the bottom of the mount so no gas or anything else could be contained between the bladder and the metal housing.
I believe the load is actually suspended by the concentric rings of rubber and metal at the top and dampened by the liquid in the bottom like a shock absorber. The vibration comes when the rubber weakens enough to allow the inner parts to come in contact with one another.
