How describing the cold start problem? There was a cold start problem inherent to that year/car/engine combo!
The wire you pull off that makes black smoke is the one we'll deal with today. Acquire a 2.5k ohm 1/4 watt resistor, modify the connector so that the resistor is soldered inline with the harness to the coolant temp sensor.
