The bottom of the boot just kind of pops into a plastic retainer. If you can grab a hold of one corner and pull straight out it should pop out and then the rest will come right out. The shifter knob screws off. I'd clean all the dust and debris out and if you feel like the gear shifter is hard to move you might lube up the base of it.
