Depends on the 'writing'
Some don't differentiate and some have "vorne" embossed in the rubber.
Vorne is German for front so that side would face the front. I have an '87 300D. For mine, at least, the front and rear have the same part and stock numbers from Fast Lane.
For anything critical, like these, I would write to Roy (user name whunter)
