When I bought my '88 300 TE, I thought the headlights were very weak. I went up to 80W/100W bulbs, which performed much better and don't seem to antagonize oncoming traffic. However, they cooked both sockets, and both headlamps failed. I replaced them with aftermarket ones for about $5.00 apiece, and have had no probs so far (about 6 months; I've looked, and they are as new still).

I also upgraded my 500 to 80/100W Bright White bulbs; did the sockets too to avoid the inevitable melt-down. So far, I'm glad I upgraded.
