Let me add to that.
The engine, through the combustion process exerts a lot of vibration from the crankshaft to the flywheel. This vibration resonates to the engine block and on to the car’s body in which we hear as we accelerate up to speed. The Flex Plate dampens this vibration from the engine to the driveline and reduces the noise that we hear.
As shown in the pic. The Flex plate is #48 and is shaped like a triangle. It bolts in the center to the crankshaft and flywheel (#46a), with the flywheel sandwiched in the middle of the crankshaft and flex plate.
The torque converter bolts to the three outer points of the triangle shaped flex plate. As the engine spins and turns the torque converter, the flex plate flexes and dampens the vibration leading to the torque converter.
