I can see that the old 3.0 liter iron block/head 5 cylinder diesel is a badass motor... but about about the newer 2.5 liter unit?

Are there any known problems with this engine? My mom's 190D makes some lifter noise, and I have heard similar complaints before... but are there any major problems other than that?
