Fixed.
Final update - the ECU fixed the car. I just smogged it last week and it posted the best numbers since 2002, with original cat still in place.

One thing I noticed while trolling the yards was the plethora of ECUs to choose from. It is an item that is worth replacing if you've tried everything else.
