Bought Pertronixs kit #1867A and Flamethrower coil, 3 ohm for $98 delivered. Installation was very easy - took about 1/2 hour including coil. Could not push the magnet down on the distributor shaft by hand. Thought I had it down all the way, but when I put the rotor on I could tell it was not seated correctly. Took a few gentle taps with the flat end of a hammer handle to seat it all the way. Went down a good 1/4" more. Bypassed the ballast resistor as instructed.
The engine started up easily. Let it warm up and then set the timing using a vacuum gage. Got about 17"Hg. Took it for a short ride and all seems OK. No pinging - but it is only about 30*F here in Michigan. Didn't put a timing light on it yet.
Seems to run fine - but it did with points also until I left the ignition switch on. Idle is smoother. Need more extensive testing to see if the performance is much better.
