It's horrible. I think eye-for-an-eye is a stupid way the punish offenders. Maining in the name of justice simply converts a convict into a permanent ward of the state. Unless we want to do like these other countries and institutionalize a beggar class.

I understand the visceral appeal, but come on, this is not the type of justice we need in a civilized society.

Lock them up and make the dig holes or break rocks -- that's fine with me. Or execute them. But maiming? Gimme a break.
