I understand the visceral appeal, but come on, this is not the type of justice we need in a civilized society.
Lock them up and make the dig holes or break rocks -- that's fine with me. Or execute them. But maiming? Gimme a break.

You raise some good points. Interesting that the 'eye for an eye' thingy was supposedly brought in by Moses to make punishment more fair, not more harsh, to do away with inequities like getting your hand cut off for stealing a loaf of bread.
In the Afgh. case, I would think some burning and scarring with acid would be sufficient -- blinding would be over the top but then I don't know how bad the women were injured in that case.
The impunity with which men punish women for various supposed morality violations in Islamic lands is so whack, one wonders what sort of punishment might be needed to bring about some changes.
