The whole concept may be based upon the denial of death,an intriguing and well written tome by Ernest Becker.

I also was quite taken with the theories of the Bicameral mind as extrapolated by the late Julian Jaynes,whose lectures were quite entertaining,and had the ring of plausibility,although,like every other theory is simply that,a theory.
