If it is '95 or older , you can get the codes under the hood... If '96 or newer , it requires a scanner , as MB Doctor said..
This is a perfect example of two complelely different answers and chassis, depending on the year...

E320 up to 95 is a 124 chassis and OBD1
..and 96 E320 is a 210- chassis with OBD2...completely different..
