When I had my motor out, I just released the brushes from the motor by lifting them out of the holders after pulling the keeper springs out of the way.

Pulling the squirrel cage fan just requires a couple blocks of wood to support the edges of the fan while leaving the motor off the ground, and a few taps with a punch on the motor shaft, to tap the motor down out of the fan cage.
It's just a friction fit, and at least for mine it came loose fairly easily once I figured that out.
