Yes, you coat the terminals after clamping on to the battery, whether you use a commercial spray-on product or something else. Dielectric grease is probably better than Vaseline; I mentioned Vaseline 'cause most people have it around the house. The spray-on stuff does a better job of getting onto the undersides of the terminals but anything that coats the lead will stop it from oxidizing or sulfating or whatever makes that white powdery crud (where's a chemist when we need one?).
